Lady D and her band MI$$ION will be the headline entertainment at the Obama For Change Inaugural Celebration in Washington, DC on January 19th.

This competition was extremely close. With 18.9% of the votes, Lady D won this competition by 6 votes. Who says votes don't matter?

A native of West Virginia, Lady D is a singer, songwriter, actress, director and playwright. As West Virginia's "First Lady of Soul”, Lady D is a graduate of West Virginia State University with a bachelor's degree in Communications.
Her recordings include "Nobody's Bizness” and "My Turn". "Nobody's Bizness" was released in 2003. It is the musical soundtrack from her one-woman stage play, "The Lady and the Empress," which she wrote and performs. The play is based on the life and music of blues legend, Bessie Smith and features 10 songs originally recorded by Smith in the 20's and 30's.
"My Turn" was released in March 2006 and features all original music written by Lady D and MI$$ION keyboardist, Robert Gray. It is a blend of musical styles that have heavily influenced the pair. R&B, Jazz and Reggae with just a touch of blues and funk, more accurately describes "My Turn."
Lady D is also the winner of the 2005 FestivALL Charleston Song Contest with her song, "It's A Charleston Thing." She and her band, MI$$ION were featured in the 2005 and 2006 FestivALL celebrations and they were the opening act for soul music legends, The O'Jays at FestivALL 2007. Mi$$ion combines R&B, Classic, & Urban Blues and "feel good" dance music to create a sound that is soulful and driven by steamy vocals, impressive percussion, jazzy keys, thumpin' bass and wailin' guitar.
Lady D's theatre credits include six years with Theatre West Virginia, numerous performances with the Charleston Stage Company and Kanawha Players. She has traveled her one-woman show, "The Lady and the Empress" around W.Va. and other states along with the condensed school version, "Bessie's Blues."
Of her song “Go Higher”, Lady D explains, "I loved the song, ‘Waiting on the World to Change’ by John Mayer and then I realized we can’t wait for the world to change. We have to start making the changes, even one person at a time.” She supports Obama because he “epitomizes change, has an old school work ethic and a sense of responsibility to his fellow man”.
Lady D is also vice-president of the record label, Wastelandic Paradise. Paired with co-owner and labelmate, Mechanical Renegade aka Brennen Smoot, the two have created a talent competition that will become a major event for the Charleston area called "W.Va's Finest." It is W.Va's largest vocal talent competition. This show encompasses Lady D's mission to expose, encourage and promote W.Va's vocal talent.
